Carna, in the heart of Gaeltacht on the shores of Galway Bay is an area where Irish is the everyday language. This is an area rich in ancient culture and tradition. This is also an area renowned for its skilled boat makers who build the traditional wooden sailing boats known as Galway Hookers and the small craft used commonly along the west coast called the currach.

In the sixth century St. McDara built a small church on one of the islands off the coast. The unique stone roof of the church has recently been restored. Mac Dara is greatly honoured by the people of Iar-Chonnachta. In the time of sailing boats, the fishermen used to dip their sails three times on passing the island. The saints feast day is celebrated in mid July when people make their way to the island for the celebration of mass. The three-day festival, Faile Mhic Dara, is held annually in on the 16-18 July, in Carna, it features hooker and currach races, sea-angling and childrens competitions .

The Irish language and traditional arts and culture of the Connemara Gaeltacht is celebrated with different festivals throughout the year.
